這邊特別找一下資料,解釋whom/who 和 that(those) 的差別。
先看看 Oxford Modern English Grammar對 whom/who以及that的定義:
who/whom, page. 51
relative pronouns --> wh-pharse positioned at the beginning of a relative
clause. --> such clause provides information about a person or entity denoted
by a preceding noun, called the antecedent.
who --> nominative case (來自拉丁文法,翻作主格就是名詞或代名詞)
whom --> accusative case (這是受格,簡單來說就是受詞)
Another student who wrote the same essay made the same mistake.
Lunch was served in the restaurant downstairs by the proprietor himself -
a Monsieur Salvon whom we'd met briefly.
To whom it may concern
"If the election were held today, for whom would you vote?"
Develop criteria for whom to follow on Twitter.
https://www.cdc.gov/socialmedia/tools/guidelines/twitter.html
https://www.npr.org/2012/11/03/164242319/for-whom-will-you-vote-may-be-wrong-
question
Complement of a preposition
whom we'd met briefly 的 whom
To whom it may concern 的 whom,來補足to 的意思。
。
This rule is often relaxed, though less so after a preposition; who is then
used instead.
page. 51
常常說that 也可以用who或which取代,
I like the bag which my father gave me = I like the bag that my father gave
me.
但問題是that沒有像wh-子句有一個功能,可以當作介係詞補語 (to whom/to which),
所以在Oxford Modern English Grammar把that歸類在subordinating conjuction。
page. 197
The power that enables this union Coleridge categorized as the imagination.
The nature of the work that we do is no different from any other creative arts
group.
that 在 non-Subject gap (就是與主詞無關,像the power that的 that就不可以省略)
The nature of the work we do is no different from any other creative arts
group.
page. 197
A genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs, CF has no cure and today's
median life expectancy for ___ with the disease is roughly 35 years.
CF: Cystic fibrosis (囊性纖維化,常見於猶太人。)
。
those with disease --> 暗指得到該疾病的人
